An update from the President |
|
Tuesday, 18 May 2010 19:46 |
Hello Backstagers!
With the end of the year looming, I thought I'd give you a quick update of all things Backstage. This term kicked off with Devonshire Hall's 'My Fair Lady' in the first week back. This was Devonshire's big come back to the Riley Smith Hall after a few years of shows in the Dev dining hall! 'My Fair Lady' is a traditional musical set in the early 20th century, with some great well known songs such as 'Wouldn't it be lovely' and 'I'm getting married in the morning'. The cast we're brilliant and the small yet dedicated crew we're absolute legends throughout pre-production, show week and post-production. A massive well done to everyone involved, it was a really fun show to be involved in. The second week of term was LUU's Celebrate week, which meant 'The Riley's 2010' took place in the Riley Smith Hall on the 30th of April. 'The Riley's' are the union's awards ceremony, which give LUU Backstage a chance to show off! Sure enough, it looked bloody fantastic thanks to Charles De Lord, the outgoing LUU Backstage President, who, as dictated by tradition, Production Stage Managed the event. Special congratulations to Barry Carlyon, who won the LUU Achievement award for his commitments to LSR and LUU Backstage and for generally living in the union. LUU Backstage had even more cause to celebrate at 'The Riley's' as this was our official committee handover, congratulations to the new committee! In true LUU Backstage style, 'The Riley's' were immediately followed by another show in the third week of term. Opera Soc's 'Pirate's of Penzance' was awarded a well deserved 5 stars by Leeds Student Newspaper, it was my first show as production manager and LUU Backstage's last show of the year, so naturally it was awesome. This year was the first time Opera Soc have put on two shows, 'Pirates of Penzance' followed the success of 'The Marriage of Figaro' in January. Pirates was yet another brilliant show with an ideal crew, a great big thank you to everyone involved. As you'll be aware, the elections for the activities exec took place last week, LUU Backstage Society falls under the watchful eye of the Performing Rep and I'm extremely pleased to announce that our very own Mister Tom Large was elected for this position. Unfortunately, the commitment which accompanies this role meant that Tom resigned from his position as Social Secretary on the LUU Backstage Committee, one of the open seats from the committee, Philippa Clarkson, will be temporarily filling this position. In addition to this, it has become aparent that the Alumni members elected at the LUU Backstage AGM will not be eligible for to fill committee positions as the ARC and the Activities Exec only allow students of Leeds University to sit on the committee for clubs and societies. These issues mean that there are now several unfilled positions on the LUU Backstage Committee. The current committee is as follows: President - India Ardern Secretary - Joanna Dainton Treasurer - Andrew Hughes Social Secretary - UNFILLED Publicity Officer - Penny-Jane Bourne Fundraising Officer - UNFILLED Equipment Secretary - UNFILLED Webmaster - UNFILLED Open Seat - Philippa Clarkson Open Seat - Charles De Lord
LUU Backstage will be holding an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in the autumn to re-elect for the currently unfilled positions. Thanks to all of you for a great year! There will be a farewell social before the summer, good luck with your exams! I'm looking forward to seeing you all in September for more Backstage frivolities.
Lots of Backstage Love, India Ardern LUU Backstage President |
